This defibrillator can provide life-saving cardiac shocks to restore normal heart rhythms in some victims of sudden cardiac arrest. Once connected, the device will analyze the patient’s heart rhythm to determine if a shock is appropriate.

The Defibrio app will walk you through the process with text, images, and voice prompts. You do not need to memorize these instructions. We recommend you familiarize yourself with the process so it’s not completely new in case of an emergency.

CAUTION: Like all AEDs, the Defibrio is only for use on patients who are not breathing or only gasping and unresponsive. Before using the defibrillator, gently shake the patient and loudly ask “Are you ok?” If you get a response, do not continue with defibrillation.

To help someone with a suspected cardiac arrest, follow these steps.

  1. Take a deep breath.
  2. Connect the defibrillator to your phone.  If it’s not nearby, send someone else to get it while you do CPR, if possible.
  3. Open the Defibrio app and follow the instructions.
  4. Press ‘Emergency.’
  5. Call emergency services. If someone else has already called them, skip this step.
  6. Return to the app. The app will walk you through the rest of the process.
  7. Check for breathing and responsiveness. Tap the patient on the shoulder and shout “Are you okay?,” then check their breathing. Patients who are breathing normally or responsive to questions are not candidates for defibrillation.
  8. Remove the patient’s clothing. Pads must be applied directly to skin, so remove any undershirt or bra.
  9. Get the pads ready. Take the pads out of their pocket in the defibrillator sleeve. Remove the liner that separates the two pads.
  10. Apply pads where shown. Attach the pads as shown here and in the app. Avoid broken skin, any medical patches, or applying directly over a pacemaker. If the skin is wet, dry it before attaching the pads.
  11. Move back! Make sure no one is touching the patient, pads, or wires when the app tells you it’s checking the heart rhythm.
WARNING: Make sure the patient is not in liquid, near any flammable substances, or touching a conductive object that other people are touching (a metal bench or floor, for example).
  1. Administer the shock if the app advises. Again, make sure no one is touching the patient in any way.
  2. Provide CPR.  After a shock is delivered, perform chest compressions as instructed by the app until it asks to check the heart rhythm again.

Repeat steps 11 through 13 until the patient starts breathing on their own or medical personnel arrive.

Once trained medical personnel reach the patient, remove the Defibrio pads and let them take over care of the patient.
